Engen Celebrates Top Maths and Science Learners Across Four Provinces, Reaching 699 Learners Through STEM Programme

Year-end awards recognise academic excellence, improvement and commitment as Engen, Raizcorp and Advantage Learn strengthen support for South Africa’s future scientists, engineers and innovators.

SOUTH AFRICA — Outstanding Mathematics and Physical Sciences learners from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape have been recognised at the Engen Maths & Science Schools (EMSS) Year-End Awards, celebrating academic achievement, personal improvement and dedication to learning.

The awards form part of a programme that supported 699 learners across 42 schools in four provinces this year, helping Grades 10 to 12 learners strengthen their academic performance and prepare for further studies and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Delivered through a partnership between Engen, Raizcorp and Advantage Learn, EMSS combines structured academic support, mentorship and blended learning to help learners build stronger foundations in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

The provincial awards recognised learners in three categories: Top Learner, Most Improved Learner and Most Engaged Learner, acknowledging not only academic results but also progress, participation and commitment.

The Western Cape accounted for the largest share of programme participants, with 269 learners across 10 schools. KwaZulu-Natal followed with 207 learners across 11 schools, while Gauteng supported 137 learners across 11 schools. The Eastern Cape had 86 learners across 10 schools.

Each provincial event featured a keynote address by Engen, certificate presentations for Grades 10 to 12 learners, an address by a Grade 12 top learner and a special address by an EMSS alumnus.

The programme aims to create opportunities for learners to improve their academic performance while developing the confidence and capabilities needed to pursue tertiary education and STEM-related careers.

Allon Raiz, founder and CEO of Raizcorp, said the achievements demonstrated what learners could accomplish when they received consistent support and encouragement.

“These learners have shown what can be achieved through consistent effort, the right support, and belief in their own potential. By recognising achievement, improvement and engagement, we celebrate not only results, but also the dedication and determination it takes to succeed,” Raiz said.

“EMSS exists to give young people the foundation and confidence to pursue further studies and careers in STEM, and these learners are an encouraging example of that potential.”

His remarks highlighted the programme’s focus on recognising different forms of progress, ensuring that learners are celebrated for their academic performance as well as their determination and involvement in the learning process.

‘Investing in young people’s education is an investment in South Africa’s future’

Olwethu Mdabula, CSI Manager at Engen, said investing in education was essential to developing the country’s future talent and expanding opportunities for young people.

“Our collaboration with Raizcorp strengthens this impact by recognising learners’ achievements and encouraging them to pursue further studies and careers in STEM fields. The dedication shown by this year’s learners is a reminder of what can be achieved when talent is supported, and opportunity is created,” she added.

Through the partnership, the programme combines academic resources, mentorship and digital learning opportunities to help learners prepare for higher education and careers in fields where STEM skills are increasingly important.

The provincial awards recognised learners across Grades 10, 11 and 12 for their achievements, improvement and engagement.

The EMSS awards highlight the importance of sustained academic support in helping learners strengthen their Mathematics and Physical Sciences skills.

By combining structured learning with mentorship and blended learning, the programme seeks to help young people prepare for tertiary education and careers in fields that rely on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The partnership between Engen, Raizcorp and Advantage Learn also reflects the role that collaboration between business and education-focused organisations can play in supporting learners and recognising their potential.

As South Africa continues to develop the skills needed for a changing economy, initiatives that help learners improve their performance in Mathematics and Physical Sciences can contribute to a stronger pipeline of future professionals and innovators.

For the 699 learners reached this year, the awards represent recognition of their efforts and an encouragement to continue pursuing their academic goals.

The message from the programme is clear: when young people receive the right support and opportunities, their potential to contribute to South Africa’s future can be strengthened.
