Knowledge for today, skills for tomorrow

EMSS is designed to help learners strengthen their academic foundations while developing skills that can prepare them for the world beyond school.

Strong foundations in Mathematics and Physical Sciences can open the door to further study and careers across science, technology, engineering and other STEM-related fields. Through EMSS, learners deepen their understanding of key concepts, strengthen their problem-solving abilities and gain greater confidence in applying what they learn.

The programme also introduces learners to entrepreneurship, developing an entrepreneurial mindset that encourages them to recognise opportunities, think differently and see themselves as the job creators, not just the job seekers, of the future. Alongside this, learners explore Artificial Intelligence and its growing role in the world around them, building their understanding of a technology that is increasingly shaping how we live, learn and work.

Physical Sciences

Understanding the concepts & learning to apply them

Physical Sciences is about understanding how and why things happen – and being able to apply that knowledge to solve problems.

Through a combination of online learning, assignments, assessments and in-person sessions, EMSS gives learners regular opportunities to practise, ask questions, focus on areas where they need additional support and become more confident in applying their knowledge.

By staying engaged with the programme and consistently working through the material, learners can deepen their understanding of Physical Sciences and develop the skills to tackle increasingly challenging work.

Mathematics

Strengthening understanding & building problem-solving skills

Mathematics is about more than just finding the right answer. It develops the ability to think logically, solve problems and work through complex challenges with confidence.

The EMSS blended-learning approach gives learners ongoing opportunities to learn, practise and test their understanding. Online learning activities and regular assignments reinforce what learners are studying at school, while in-person sessions give them the opportunity to ask questions and work through areas they may be finding difficult.

Regular assessments help learners track their progress, identify gaps in their knowledge and understand where they need to focus their efforts.

Entrepreneurship

Developing the skills to create opportunities

Through a number of Entrepreneurship modules, EMSS gives learners an introduction to the thinking, skills and practical business knowledge that underpin entrepreneurship.

Developed by entrepreneurship experts at Africa’s leading business incubator, Raizcorp, the curriculum draws on more than 25 years of experience helping entrepreneurs build stronger, more sustainable businesses. The curriculum introduces learners to the skills, knowledge and ways of thinking that are important in building and running a business – from critical and design thinking to management accounts, networking, closing the deal, resource expansion, and business and boardroom etiquette.

The aim is to give learners a broader understanding of how business works, while developing skills they can carry into the world beyond school. It also encourages them to see entrepreneurship as a real possibility for their own futures – empowering them to become the job creators, rather than only the job seekers, of tomorrow.

Artificial Intelligence

Understanding AI & its growing role in our world

From Grade 10, EMSS learners build AI fluency alongside their Maths and Science studies. Through short modules in Terms 2 and 3 on the Advantage Learn platform, supported by their STEM Mentors, learners discover how AI works, how to use it as a study partner without letting it do their thinking for them, and how to question what it tells them. They also explore how to use AI responsibly without losing their own voice and creativity, and how it is reshaping the world of work. Along the way, they gain the confidence to use these tools to learn, create and solve real problems.
