The EMSS Terms & Conditions outline the requirements and responsibilities that apply to learners participating in the programme.
Please read the full Terms & Conditions carefully to understand what is expected of you as an EMSS learner.
Engen Maths & Science Schools
These Terms and Conditions apply to applications for, selection into and participation in the Engen Maths & Science Schools programme (“EMSS” or “the Programme”).
The Programme is sponsored by Engen Petroleum / Vivo Energy (“the Sponsor”) and organised and administered by Raizcorp and Advantage Learn (collectively, “the Organisers”).
These Terms and Conditions apply to each learner who applies to participate in the Programme (“the Learner”) and their parent or legal guardian (“the Parent/Guardian”).
By submitting an application, the Learner and their Parent/Guardian agree to the application and selection terms below. If the Learner is offered and accepts a place on the Programme, they also agree to the Programme participation terms and the EMSS Learner Code of Conduct.
1
1.1 To be eligible to apply, a Learner must:
(a) attend an approved feeder school;
(b) live within a region in which the Programme operates;
(c) take both Mathematics and Physical Science; and
(d) have achieved at least a 40% average in both Mathematics and Physical Science.
1.2 Children of Engen employees may apply even if they do not attend an approved feeder school or live within an existing Programme region. These applications will be referred to the Sponsor for ratification before a final selection decision is made.
1.3 All information and supporting documentation submitted as part of an application must be complete, accurate and truthful. The Organisers may verify this information and may reject an application or withdraw an offer if materially false, misleading or incomplete information is provided.
1.4 The Programme Organisers reserve the right to verify your academic results directly with your school at any time during your participation in EMSS.
2
2.1 Submitting an application or meeting the minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee selection for or admission to the Programme. Places are limited and are offered in accordance with the Programme’s selection criteria, applicant ranking and the number of places available.
2.2 The Organisers reserve the right to select Learners for the Programme in accordance with these criteria.
2.3 Successful applicants must accept their place by the communicated deadline, failing which the place may be offered to another applicant.
3
3.1 Learners who accept a place on the Programme must:
(a) complete 100% of the online learning activities assigned to them each month by the communicated deadline;
(b) attend at least 70% of the in-person Programme meetups held during the Programme year;
(c) participate in required assessments and other compulsory Programme activities; and
(d) comply with the EMSS Learner Code of Conduct.
3.2 If exceptional circumstances prevent a Learner from meeting a Programme requirement, the Learner or their Parent/Guardian must notify the Organisers as soon as reasonably possible (contact Daphne Govender: daphneg@raizcorp.com). The Organisers may request supporting information and will consider exceptional circumstances on a case-by-case basis. Any concessions do not constitute a precedent.
4
4.1 Learners who complete their monthly assignments by the applicable deadline may qualify for a monthly mobile-data incentive. The data incentive is conditional and may vary according to the Programme’s current incentive structure. It is not guaranteed.
4.2 A Learner will receive one strike for each month in which they fail to complete 100% of the assigned monthly learning activities. Two consecutive strikes plus 1 more strike will result in the loss of the data incentive.
4.3 After three strikes, the Learner will have one further month to catch up the outstanding work. Failure to do so may result in their place on the Programme being withdrawn.
5
5.1 Learners must comply with the EMSS Learner Code of Conduct, which applies to in-person and online Programme activities, including Programme WhatsApp groups.
5.2 The Organisers may suspend or withdraw a Learner’s place for:
(a) failure to meet the Programme’s assignment or attendance requirements;
(b) repeated failure to participate in compulsory Programme activities;
(c) serious or repeated breaches of the EMSS Learner Code of Conduct;
(d) materially false or misleading information relating to the Learner’s eligibility or participation; or
(e) any other material breach of these Terms and Conditions.
5.3 Where appropriate, the Learner and Parent/Guardian will be notified of concerns and given an opportunity to address them. The Organisers may take immediate action where reasonably necessary in cases of serious misconduct or risks to the safety or wellbeing of others.
5.4 If the Learner and/or Parent/Guardian believes that a decision to suspend or withdraw the Learner’s place is unfair, they may appeal the decision in writing. The appeal will be reviewed by a representative nominated by the Organisers.
6
6.1 The Learner or Parent/Guardian must notify the Organisers if the Learner changes school or moves during the Programme year. Failure to do so may result in removal from the Programme.
6.2 A change of school or location does not automatically end the Learner’s participation. Continued participation will depend on the Programme operating in the relevant area, the Learner meeting the applicable feeder-school requirements, the availability of a place and the Learner remaining able to meet the Programme’s participation requirements. Any transfer is subject to approval by the Organisers.
7
7.1 Learners and/or their Parents/Guardians are responsible for arranging and paying for transport to and from in-person Programme activities.
7.2 Learning materials and other items provided to Learners, including textbooks, workbooks, stationery and Programme-branded clothing/items, do not need to be paid for or returned unless otherwise advised.
7.3 The Programme does not provide Learners with mobile phones, tablets, laptops or other electronic devices as a standard benefit. Learners are responsible for having suitable access to a device required for online Programme activities.
8
8.1 A Learner’s acceptance into the Programme is valid for that Programme year only. Learners who wish to continue with EMSS in the following year must reapply. Readmission is not automatic or guaranteed.
9
9.1 The Sponsor and Organisers will collect and process personal information reasonably required to administer, deliver, monitor and evaluate the Programme. This may include identification and contact information, school and grade information, academic results and reports, assessment and assignment results, and attendance and participation records.
9.2 Personal information may, where reasonably necessary for Programme purposes, be accessed and processed by the Sponsor, the Organisers, relevant mentors and authorised service providers. Learner results, progress and participation information may also be shared with the Sponsor and the Learner’s school.
9.3 By accepting a place on the Programme, the Learner and Parent/Guardian consent to the Learner being added to the relevant Programme WhatsApp group(s) for communication, learning and support purposes. They acknowledge that the Learner’s mobile number, WhatsApp profile name and profile photograph (if enabled in the Learner’s WhatsApp privacy settings) may be visible to other members of the group.
9.4 Personal information will be processed in accordance with applicable South African data-protection legislation, including the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA).
10
10.1 The Sponsor and Organisers may make reasonable changes to the Programme where circumstances require, including changes to participating schools, clusters, sites or regions; dates or venues; delivery methods; Programme activities; service providers; assessments; and incentives or benefits.
10.2 The Sponsor may suspend or discontinue its affiliation with any school, site, region, activity or other element. Where reasonably possible, affected Learners and Parents/Guardians will be informed of material changes.
11
11.1 Participation in the Programme does not guarantee any particular academic result or improvement, admission to a university or other tertiary institution, a bursary or scholarship, employment, admission into the following year of the Programme, or any other particular academic, educational or employment outcome.
12
12.1 The Learner and Parent/Guardian are responsible for providing current contact details and monitoring Programme communications sent to them by the Organisers within 48 hours.
12.2 If a Learner no longer wishes to participate in the Programme, the Learner or Parent/Guardian must notify the Organisers (contact Daphne Govender: daphneg@raizcorp.com).
12.3 The Sponsor and/or Organisers may update these Terms and Conditions where reasonably necessary. Material changes affecting existing participants will be communicated to Learners and Parents/Guardians.
13
13.1 By submitting an application and, if selected, accepting a place on the Programme, the Learner and Parent/Guardian confirm that the information provided is accurate, that they have read and understood these Terms and Conditions, and that they understand that neither application nor participation guarantees selection, readmission or any particular academic, bursary, tertiary-education or employment outcome.
13.2 If the Learner accepts a place on the Programme, the Learner and Parent/Guardian agree to comply with the Programme participation requirements and the EMSS Learner Code of Conduct.
